THE PLATFORM #10: September 1997

An occasional newsletter of the Computers and Sculpture Forum.
This issue prepared by Tim Duffield (assisted by Christian Lavigne)

Yes, it really is THE PLATFORM again! After several false starts it resurrects itself to bring you information about INTERSCULPT'97.

FIRST:

an explanation for the non-appearance of this newsletter for a while. I have been producing it for quite some time now. As people like Rob Fisher, David Smalley, Robert Smith and others who have given their time to the Computers and Sculpture Forum and the ISC know, volunteerism is hard work.

I decided a few months ago that I had to stand back a little and concentrate on my own work - both what I really want to do and all the things I have to do to put a roof over my head. I didn't mean to stand back so far that I should step off the cliff -- but that appears to be what I did. It was not solely the need to concentrate on other things, but the exigencies of life - aging parents, children in school, etc -- that took over.

I awoke the other day to realize I had a stack of unanswered Computers and Sculpture e-mail and that Intersculpt was going to be upon us VERY SHORTLY! So, I apologize to all of you whose messages went unanswered. I hope that this brief newsletter answers your questions. If not, please get back in touch with me, and let's try again. (Your receipt of The Platform may be answer enough if you had requested to be put on the mailing list.)

SECOND:

I have left it very late to inform everybody of:

INTERSCULPT '97

The simultaneous transoceanic extravaganza taking place in both Philadelphia and Paris in October

My thanks go out to Christian Lavigne and his colleagues in France who have worked hard to put this second incarnation of Intersculpt together in Paris.
I know time is very short, but please join with me in making certain that the American end of the activities is a success.

To refresh your memory: for the past two or three years, the Computers and Sculpture Forum has been in contact with a similar group based in France -- Ars Mathematica. The main lights of the organization there are Alexandre Vitkine and Christian Lavigne.

Christian was a participant at Sculpture '96 in Providence, where he presented the work of European sculptors who use the computer.

The Computers and Sculpture Forum and Ars Mathematica staged Intersculpt '95, a simultaneous exhibition in Philadelphia and Paris in October 1995. In addition to the actual gallery shows, an interactive link with Paris was established, and real-time events took place via teleconferencing. Also, we arranged for sculptural forms to be milled by machines on both sides of the Atlantic controlled by computers on the opposite side. Rick de Coyte, who owns the Silicon Gallery in Philadelphia, staged the show on the American side. His gallery is one of the very few in the country that shows work created with the aid of the computer.

Intersculpt was planned as a biennial event, to take place in the intervening years between the ISC conferences. It is now time for:

INTERSCULPT'97

The following is the official announcement from the French participants, which I have adapted slightly:

This year, our biennial event for new technologies in sculpture is scheduled from Friday, 3, October, to Saturday, 18, October. As before, INTERSCULPT will take place in both Paris and Philadelphia. The galleries involved are the GALERIE GRAPHES in Paris and the SILICON GALLERY in Philadelphia.

The opening day, October 3rd is "First Friday" in Philadelphia, a monthly event when the whole gallery area stages a grand "Open House" night. It is usually very well attended.

The galleries will show both real and virtual artworks: sculpture, 3D forms, pictures, documents, prints, videos, and web sites, etc. We hope once again to establish a videoconferencing link between artists and the public in both cities. We will be pleased to receive and show from American artists:

At the Galerie Graphes, these facilities will be available:

We have organized a special afternoon (October 14) during the exhibition for lectures and demonstrations in the French Senate (Palais du Luxembourg).
Mr. Georges Taillandier, Chairman of the French Association for Rapid Prototyping, and MR Pierre Bézier, the very famous inventor of Bezier splines, will be our guests of honor.
We have succeeded in persuading the President of the French Senate, Rene Monory, to be present.
We are very much hoping that we will be able to teleconference with Philadelphia on that day.

A request from Ars Mathematica:

Urgently we ask artists to:

* Please contribute to IS'97: physical objects or electronic documents to exhibit (small real objects sent by mail)

* Please try to come to the galleries in person to liven up the exhibitions in Paris and Philadelphia.

* Please send to the Paris gallery, as soon as possible, ISO, DXF, or STL files, for robosculptures or engravings which we will, as far as we are able, realize during the event.

* Please send to the Paris gallery, as soon as possible, materials for lectures and our web site: slides, prints, digital pictures, videos, comments, updated news (works in progress, bios, etc.).

* Before sending anything, contact Christian to confirm arrangements, addresses, etc.

We hope to read you soon. Best Regards. Amitiés

Sculpture on the Internet...............

Have you visited the International Sculpture Center web site yet? The URL is http://www.sculpture.org.

A lot of people have devoted much time to the development of the site, Robert Smith in particular. Visit it, and take advantage of the Portfolio section.
